Ferry Heights House - Fair Lawn, NJ

First stage of underpainting complete.  I will be in tomorrow's New York Times, Metropolitan section.

I have never paid for a pay-per-view event, but I wouldn't miss this epic fight no matter what the cost.

Ed, if you are reading this, your painting is ready for you whenever you have time to pick it up.  Thanks!

New York Times - NY,NY

I'm in today's New York Times, Metropolitan Section.  This is the 3rd time I have been written about in the Times.

The Star Ledger did a nice article this past week, and there is a mention about the show in the Wyckoff Suburban News.

I had a good bicycle ride in the city yesterday, and noticed that 2 locations that I always wanted to paint have been torn down.  Domino sugar plant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and the 57th St. garage in Manhattan.  I got snarled at by some Hell's Angels also, so at least some things never change.

Glenwood Road House - Ridgewood, NJ

Completed painting.

8" x 12"

Oil on linen.

I am donating the Schuyler Diner painting to the Middlesex County Museum/Cornelius Low House for their permanent collection after the current show closes as a token of my gratitude for everything they have done.

I do have a secondary reason for donating these paintings to the museums thus far.  I can now say that I am in the permanent collection of 3 different museums.  Maybe I'll donate one to the Met in NY.

History of NJ Diners - Piscataway, NJ

Today was a great day for NJ history and NJ diners. The Cornelius Low House Museum in Piscataway hosted the opening reception for "The History of New Jersey Diners" exhibit. Over 400 people visited the museum. Wonderful time was had by all! I'm very happy with how the exhibit looks and how my paintings are hung.  Thanks to all the staff of the museum and the curators of this wonderful exhibition.

News 12 NJ television aired a nice piece about the show, with very good close up shots of some of my paintings.  Click on the link below to check it out.

Middlesex County Museum Show - Piscataway, NJ

Little article in today's NJ.com about this diner show.

Opening reception is this Sunday at 2:30.  1225 River Road, Piscataway, NJ.  Free admission.

Article

I had an idea while riding the bicycle recently.  I will be doing small (5" x 7" and 6" x 6") paintings on panel of private homes from life (plein-air).  As soon as the weather cooperates, I will begin this next phase of my commissioned work.  I will be painting small parts of each home, instead of more formal views of the whole house.  For example: the front door, a dormer, a window or any other vignette I feel will make an interesting composition.

I will continue with the photorealistic commissions that I have on tap in the studio, but these little paintings will be much looser, direct and painterly.  I have been wanting to get back to painting from life for 20 years, and now is the perfect time and place.  I expect each painting will take only a few hours to complete and will sell quite well.

Any inquires about commissioning one of these paintings, please email obern@optonline.net or call 201-694-1379.

BERGEN PAC - Englewood, NJ

The snack bar did not survive this past Winter.  It is totally destroyed, and I'm guessing this is the only painting of the structure that exists.  The open to the public building looks as though it will not remain standing for long.  Both paintings were purchased by the Fritz Behnke Historical Museum in Paramus last year.

I have been scheduled for a one-person show at Bergen Pac in Englewood, NJ for February 2016.     This historic theater should be a nice venue to exhibit my work.

Little blurb on MyBergen.com about the Middlesex County Museum show which opens with a reception this Sunday at 2:30.  1225 River Road, Piscataway, NJ.

Lambert Castle Museum - Paterson, NJ

I am donating these two little paintings to the Lambert Castle Museum in Paterson, NJ for their permanent collection as a token of my gratitude for exhibiting my work. They are both views of locations in Paterson.

It was a wonderful experience to show paintings in such an historic and beautiful venue. Thanks very much for everything to the staff and director, and thank you to everyone who took the time to attend the show during it's run.  It turned out to be the highest attended show that the museum has ever had.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WORKS OF NEW JERSEY ARTIST MARK OBERNDORF FEATURED IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY MUSEUM’S ICONS OF AMERICAN CULTURE: HISTORY OF NEW JERSEY DINERS
The renowned Bergen County artist shares his iconic New Jersey diner images starting April 12th

WYCKOFF, NJ (April 2015)- On April 12th a year-long exhibit opens at the Middlesex County Museum’s Cornelius Low House paying homage to New Jersey’s classic diners.  This immersive art experience honors the unique status New Jersey has attained as the “land of diners.”  With their colorful neon signs reflecting off stainless steel surfaces, the Garden State’s diners have long been an inspiration for realist painter Mark Oberndorf.  Several of the artist’s oil-on-linen canvases will be presented in the show.  From the timeless Bendix Diner to landmark White Manna, Oberndorf’s name has become synonymous with capturing these local landmarks for generations to come.
“It is an honor to be included in such a meaningful tribute to these timeless structures which have provided me with so much wonderful subject matter over the years,” said Oberndorf.    The show which runs from April 12th  2015 through  June 26th  2016, encourages visitors to explore the beauty and distinctiveness of New Jersey’s diner culture.
Oberndorf observes, “These businesses have long served as essential gathering places for their local communities.  They nourished the souls of these locales well beyond the food they served.”
